With mild anticipation I waited for the prompt
Kellie blessed us again with her Friday writes
This week she wants to see what we remember
From our earliest memory, history in my sights.

I remember a time that chronicles an early fear
Before anatomy was understood to a child’s mind
Of a playtime accident that could have been worse
And how family can tease and yet still be so kind.

Three siblings free to play hide and seek in the house
Ages three to five, with the middle being yours truly
A race down a hallway to try to be safe from being it
Yet a corner, waxed hardwood and a table bested me.

I raced round the corner and slid on my stocking feet
Not the most nimble, I tumbled and rolled instead
Bounced off the wall and kept from breaking a bone
But I couldn’t move the table, even with my hard head.

The brace for the legs was the reason I finally stopped
Above my left eye it cut causing me to scream and shout
As the blood flowed and my parents ran to offer aid
My only concern was to call – “Don’t let my bones fall out”.

A trip to my uncle’s, who was also our family physician
No damage done, cleaned up and some butterfly stitches
I think of it from time to time as I see my own reflection
And now a few others know as I bow to Kellie’s wishes.

  1. Thank you!!! 🙂
I have a small scar in my eyebrow that my grandma said I got by falling into the corner of a coffee table when I was very young. I don’t remember the incident, so it’s strange to have a scar without my own story to tell about it.

I loved reading this. Reminded me of the tumbles my sisters and I took as children.

I love it; I have one I received last spring; was in a consignment shop and did not see steps well….I fell and hit my brow on a table and not only had to get stitches on my brow but had a concussion; my whole face was bruised and my first black eye!!!! lol the tales we can share; you always amaze me with your writings Charles; smiles and hugs Phyllis

  4. Oh the treacherous path of hide and seek. I love, “Don’t let my bones fall out.” ::)

  5. Heidi says:

Reminds me of a memory not of my running into something, but my nephew. When he was two he was running in the house, a no-no, and managed to run into an open door. He lay on his back in his blue footies spread eagle for a few moments before jumping up and running to me for comfort. For a month he had a blue line that was the top of a long bump on his forehead.
