Happy Birthday

Oh those words that let us know that others care
Funny how they have different thoughts each year
I thought of a friend that is celebrating today
And wonder what each that messages has to say.

When we are a child, people pinch our cheek and smile
They wish us a birthday wish and care, no denial
The wishes mean they care so much that we are to grow
No other care in the world except to let us know.

Middle aged we find a slight change in the meaning
As if the wishes are there to help us in reasoning
They wonder “Did you have to bake your on cake?”
With family and friends coming, you have dinner to make.

At my age it seems that they are in wonder and awe
“Wow, you made another year” is what it feels they saw
So as you think of me…
