Denial

It isn’t easy to stand by a bed
Waiting, watching a life slip away
Offering hope and a hand to hold
Not always knowing what to say.

To see such a vibrant person fade
No hope of a recovery to be seen
Life dripping out of plastic tubes
Careful to keep comfort and clean.

Never easy on family and friends
Trying to smile and cover grief
Cards, plants, photos and flowers
Trusting meds for whatever relief.

To see hope frail life becomes
Wishing life to linger a while
Yet knowing the end to be near
Even if patient is in denial.
