When The Smoke Clears

When the smoke clears and the remnants appear
The realization sets in that there is no more
The burned out remains of what might have been
No longer will you be back to walk through that door.

So you board up the past, put up a wall all around.
No reason left to remember as you wander through
Life is too short to regret the choices that were made
With all the warning signs, maybe we already knew.

We try to look forward and leave the past behind
There will be other choices that may cause us pain
There will be other doorways that will open at times
Only the strong will walk through and try again.

So for now while the smoke is left to clear
I feel the past in the distance and try to smile
I’ll wish it well as I turn my back and walk away
Who knows what we’ll find as we walk another mile.

Good analogy of life, its twists and turns and unpredictability.

  2. Phyllis Sears says:

as Solenpoet wrote life is full of twists and turns and very unpredictable. How we handle those curves and twists sometimes determine our future. Sometimes it can make you lose a diamond looking at the stones we’ve lost. Beautiful well written poem as always
