The Heart

How can we ever know what the heart wants
It can be such a fickle thing full of life
At times it will lead us to such love and feeling
Other times it drags us to a path full of strife.

We can try to safeguard the whole of our heart
But so many times there is just a piece left unguarded
We offer it to someone and feel so confident its safe
Only to find that it is crushed like an insect unwanted.

It causes the walls to build a little higher
Maybe a moat to keep others away as we heal
Barbed wire and turrets keep us from being ourself
But it seems as if nothing will ever be real.

Not the way that most want to live out their life
But it takes time to once again let someone back in
I’m sure that at some point the heart will reach out
To keep from loving and living would be almost a sin.
